Additional learning support
At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need additional support to feel confident, engaged and able to achieve their best. At Robert Townson High School, we work in partnership with families, and with students where appropriate, to create support plans and adjustments that meet each individual’s needs.
Additional learning support at RTHS may include:
Collaborative support
- Teachers, support staff and families working together to understand a student’s needs
- Regular check-ins to monitor progress and adjust supports as needed
Specialist assistance
- Support for students learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
- Targeted programs to extend high potential and gifted students
Targeted learning intervention
- Small-group tutoring to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills
- Individualised learning strategies designed to build confidence and success
Classroom adjustments
- Accessible and inclusive classroom environments
- Assistive technology to support learning
- Clear instructional resources and scaffolded learning
- Modified content, additional guidance or alternative lesson focus
Assessment adjustments
- Extra time or breaks during tasks
- Simplified instructions or clearer language
- Alternative formats for demonstrating understanding (e.g. verbal, practical or visual responses)
We identify when a student may need additional support by:
- Noticing changes in learning, engagement or behaviour
- Reviewing assessment data and learning progress
- Listening to concerns raised by parents, carers or students themselves
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
